About Xylosound

photo of Xylosound membersXylosound is a group of adults most of whom have special learning needs. Andy Burton (Xylosound’s musical director) originally met the members at social education centres in Huddersfield. Xylosound became established with help from Kirklees Council and Friends of Xylosound who fundraised for instruments, rent and tuition fees.

The group meets every Friday to make and share music and also to rehearse for performances.

A major influence for Andy at this time was Jan Wyatt. She worked from the City Lit College in London teaching adults with special learning needs and formed the group Special Jam. Jan created ways of music-making with large xylophones. She evolved a technique of learning with tunes that have repeating patterns. Jan made up songs to go with them, and we have included some of these in our book.

Over the years Xylosound have created their own tunes and songs following Jan’s example.

The best way to learn our music is by ear so recordings of Xylosound’s music are on the CD that is enclosed with the book.

Andy Burton is musical director of Xylosound. He is now a partner of Satellite Arts based at Watershed Workshops, Slaithwaite. He plays in The Moonraker Ceilidh Band, Jack O’ Lantern and FEB. He writes songs and music and has recorded CDs with music broadcast on BBC 3 and 4.
